About Pine Mountain Nursery

The Nursery is nestled below Pine Mountain on the beautiful mid-upper reaches of the Brisbane River about 20 minutes downstream from Wivenhoe Dam in Queensland Australia.  Pine Mountain Nursery is an Ipswich based business, locally owned and managed by Gail and John Craigie. Not only do we service South East Queensland but we also send plant orders right around the east coast of Australia to New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and South Australia by mail order.   We also export clivia seed to many places around the world, including Canada, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom and USA.

We are not "middle men" or dealers in other people's seed or plants. We breed and grow beautiful plants that provide value and pleasure to our customers. As the plant grower you know where the plants come from.  We offer a rapid delivery service response and ongoing support and advice on your plant needs. We also produce a monthly newsletter entitled "Its all about clivias", available free by e-mail upon request.

Pine Mountain Nursery has been acquiring clivia seed from well known international and local breeders for many years and now possesses a very large genetic pool of clivia (from Australia, Belgium, China, Japan, South Africa and USA). This gene pool provides a unique opportunity to create even stronger and more vigorous cultivars as well as extending the clivia flowering period.   We are one of the few clivia growers in Australia that export clivia seed around the world, generating export dollars for Australia.  The picture above shows some of our clivia in one of our sheds.

In recent years the magic of clivias and their demand as a houseplant has taken the world by surprise. Clivias not only make wonderful gifts but become an everlasting treasure.  They are classed amongst the most desirable of all connoisseur plants, offering not only spectacular flowers but also interesting variation in both leaf variegation and plant form. Read more about the magic of clivias and hybridising on the Clivia Hybridising page.

Pine Mountain Nursery is also a leading agapanthus breeder with two varieties currently registered with IP Australia and many new plant cultivars at various stages of development on the way.

Poisonous Plant Classification

Many garden plants can cause harm. Some are commercially available and very popular; others are no longer readily available but still exist in older gardens; and yet others are favourite indoor ornamentals, cut-flowers, weeds, or even fruit and vegetables that we consume frequently, often without realising that other parts of those same plants are harmful. It is impractical and unnecessary to remove from our gardens every single plant that could conceivably be harmful. A more sensible approach is to be aware of the potential danger of a particular plant, and then assess how much or how little risk it poses to the people and animals that live on or visit your property.   The Department of Agriculture located in your State can assist with information about poisonous plants. A good on-line garden resource is "Harmful Garden Plants in Western Australia" Bulletin No. 4641, ISSN 1448-0352, April 2005. Never experiment by eating any plants or parts of plants that are not well known as being edible.

For cases of suspected poisoning, telephone the Poisons Information Centre (13 11 26), which has a national computer link indicating the toxicity of most plants, together with poisoning symptoms and appropriate treatment.
