To help plan your day's outing here are some suggestions -
The Kholo Botanical Gardens is a small park of 376,000 square metres located on a bluff overlooking the Brisbane River with a path leading down to the river. The park was established in 1988 as a bicentennial project. It has two 1878 vintage pump wells on site, the original source of water for the ‘city’ of Ipswich.
Featuring significant remnant vegetation is has been enhanced with more ornamental native plants combined with a few exotic species. A protected gully has been restored to preserve local rainforest species and a boardwalk created to maximise enjoyment of the experience. Of interest in the Gardens are the 50m tall Queensland kari pine (Agathis robusta) and 60m tall hoop pine (Araucaria cunninghamii) planted by early settlers. A number of water features including water falls and ponds attract native birds and provide restful spots for family picnics on the nearby lawns. For public use covered cooking facilities, tables and toilets are present and further development includes refurbishment of the historic “Woollen Mills” homestead re-located to this site.
Included in the park is a concrete cricket pitch, electric barbeques and a childrens playground. The back of the park is a conservation area containing some rare local flora.
Wivenhoe Dam is open during daylight hours only. The gates at Hamon Cove, Logans Inlet, Cormorant Bay & the Spillway Common are locked after hours.
Additional bank access is permitted at Cormorant Bay, Branch Creek, Somerset Park (on Stanley River arm below Somerset Dam wall), the information centre (next to dam wall) & O'Sheas Crossing (Brisbane River). Swings, toilets, drinking water, Bar B Qs, & picnic tables are provided at most locations.
How to get to Pine Mountain Nursery
If traveling from Brisbane, take the Warrego Hwy and after about 10 minutes take the Pine Mountain Road exit and travel on Pine Mountain Road down to the Cricket Pitch on right (hall on left) and turn right into Russell's Road. Towards the end the road turns to gravel and divides - take the left road and follow it to the nursery (about 300 metres away). We are also on Google Maps. Need further instructions?
