![]() Pine Mountain Nursery Current Category Family: Agapanthaceae (Agapanthus Family) The Agapanthaceae is endemic to southern Africa. The genus Agapanthus was established by L'Heritier in 1788. It is also known as the Lily of the Nile. Agapanthus comes from the Greek words agape for love and anthos for flower. Today it is grown extensively around the world but in cold climates where temperatures are below 10 degrees celsius they need protection. Soil preparation plays a vital role in the success of growing agapanthus. The rhizomes can rot in wet soils. Prepare the bed by incorporating 75 to 100 mm of organic matter and sand and till to a depth of 200 to 250mm. This will allow maximium drainage and aeration. Best blooming will occur in full sun, so choose a site receiving at least 6 hours sun. Feed with a balanced fertilixer or a 1-2-1 ratio in Spring and Summer months.
