Collection: Agapanthus

Evergreen agapanthus (as opposed to deciduous and semi deciduous cultivars) retain their foliage all year round. They are beautiful architectural plants with wonderful blooms on tall stems. They look equally at home with modern architecture as they do with colonial or federation houses. Plant in rows with smaller cultivars positioned in front of larger types. This layered arrangement around pools, paths and driveways creates an amazing visual flowering impact.

They are a low maintenance popular garden plant with lush fine foliage and strong showy flower heads over Summer. There are a range of cultivars available from dwarf through to mid and full size ones. Dwarf cultivars have flower spikes usually to 45 cm; mid height ones up to around 75 cm and larger cultivars to 1.5 m in height. To avoid disappointment always purchase plants grown by division or tissue culture as seed grown plants may not be true to type.

They are easy to grow and require so little effort that they can be easily neglected. To make sure your plants flower well always plant them in full sun and when overcrowding occurs lift them and divide into new plants in Autumn. You will not only have better flowers in subsequent seasons but also more plants for your garden. Divide up the parent clump into small groups comprising two to three plants.

To get the best out of your agapanthus we recommend the incorporation of compost into well draining soil plus the addition of a complete slow release fertiliser mixed thoroughly into the soil as per manufacturer's instructions. Do not use rich organic soil mixes as these mixes can burn and kill soft tissue plants like agapanthus. A great source of fibre is coir. We mix 20% hydrated coir into the soil using a 100ltr wheelo barrow to measure it out. To keep your agapanthus looking great fertilise regularly with a complete plant food like Searles Complete Plant Food. In Autumn we use Searles Flourish to help boost bud development. In spring mix slow release fertilisers into the soil as per the recommendations on the product. We do not recommend using fish based soil conditioners on agapanthus and clivia beds. Remember to always only use the manufacturer's recommendations on fertilisers. Over fertilisation can result in foliage burn, poor flowering, loss of plant vigor and even loss as the roots burn off and rot.

If planting in a pot use a good potting mix that complies with Australian standards.

Water quality is also important. Do not use “grey water” from washing machines, etc. even if the cleaning products used state they are phosphate free and grey water friendly. Many of these cleaning products in the fine print state to use rinse only grey water. Ensure plants have adequate water in Spring and Summer but note that they can survive for long periods without being watered and still give a wonderful show of flowers.
